What's inside the canyon?

Škocjan Caves is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed cave system carved by the Reka River as it vanishes underground into the Classical Karst. The guided walk follows a path cut into the cliff face above the river, through a series of vast chambers before reaching the highlight: the Cerkvenik Bridge, a footbridge that crosses the underground canyon around 47 metres above the water. Below, the Reka continues its journey through the karst for tens of kilometres before resurfacing near the Italian border. The site has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1986, and it is protected as a Ramsar wetland. There's no underground train here as at some other Karst caves — you experience the scale on foot, which is what makes the canyon crossing so memorable.

How do you get to Škocjan Caves?

Škocjan sits in Slovenia's Classical Karst, near the town of Divača, about 1 hour 45 minutes by road from Ljubljana and roughly 40 minutes from Trieste or Koper. There's no dedicated cave-side train stop, so almost everyone arrives either by car or on an organised day trip that includes return coach transport. Guided day trips depart from Ljubljana, Trieste and Koper, and many bundle the caves with a stop in Piran, Predjama Castle or the Lipica stud farm, since none of those are more than an hour or so apart across the Karst. Škocjan or Postojna — which cave?

There are two famous cave systems in this part of Slovenia, about 25 minutes apart by road, and they're genuinely different experiences. Postojna Cave is the larger-scale, more commercial option — you ride an underground train deep into the show cave before continuing on foot, and it's the busier of the two. Škocjan Caves is quieter and wilder: no train, just a guided walk that climbs to the Cerkvenik Bridge over the world's largest known underground river canyon. Škocjan in the Classical Karst

Škocjan gives its name to karst topography itself — the term "karst" derives from this limestone plateau. Beyond the caves, the surrounding Classical Karst region is dotted with sinkholes, dry valleys and the famous Lipica stud farm, home of the Lipizzaner horse breed, plus Predjama Castle, built into a cliff face above another cave system. Many full-day tours chain two or three of these together with a stop on the Adriatic coast at Piran, making Škocjan a natural anchor for a single big day out from Ljubljana rather than a stand-alone side trip.

The guided tour covers a fixed route through the cave system, typically completed in 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. The highlights:

• Silent Cave — the drier, decorated chambers you pass through first, with stalactites and stalagmites.
• Murmuring Cave — where you first hear, then see, the Reka River roaring below.
• Cerkvenik Bridge — the footbridge crossing the underground canyon around 47m above the river; the signature moment of the visit.
• Martel's Chamber — among the largest known underground chambers in the world.
• Optional funicular — many tours offer a ride back up to the entrance instead of the return walk.

Getting to Škocjan — by city

• From Ljubljana: about 1h45 by road; almost all guided day trips depart from central Ljubljana with return coach transport included.
• From Trieste: roughly 40 minutes; several tours on this page depart directly from Trieste, useful if you're based on the Italian side of the border.
• From Koper: around 35–40 minutes; a convenient option if you're staying on the Slovenian coast or arriving by cruise ship.
• By car: Škocjan is a short detour off the A1 motorway near Divača; there's a car park at the visitor centre, a walk from the ticket office to the cave entrance.

The guided walk is not step-free — expect many stairs and some steep, uneven sections across roughly 1h45–2h, and it is not suitable for wheelchairs, prams or visitors with limited mobility. The cave stays a cool 10–12°C year-round, so bring a jacket and wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes even in summer. Photography without flash is generally permitted; large bags and tripods may need to be left at the entrance. Tours can sell out on peak summer weekends, so book ahead rather than turning up on the day.
